Flagstaff Junior Academy
Flagstaff Junior Academy will use its ESSER funding to implement interventions that address academic impact of lost instructional time, as well as responds to the social, emotional, and mental health of all students, particularly those students disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
To address learning loss, Flagstaff Junior Academy (FJA) will use the majority of its 20% set-aside to host a robust summer school program in the summer of 2022. This program will be standards-based and focus on reading, writing, and math. FJA will also offer small-group tutoring before school, after school, and at lunch. For both summer school and tutoring, FJA will use best practices and evidenced-based programming including backwards design, close reading, Six Minute Solution, Freckle and Star Reading/Math, and Engage NY Eureka Math. These programs will provide us individual progress monitoring for our students and we will train staff to analyze and use this data to address learning loss. Our summer school and small group tutoring will actively recruit students disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus, including: students from low-income families, students of color, English learners, children with disabilities, students experiencing homelessness, children in foster care, and migratory students.
To address socio-emotional needs, FJA's 20% set-aside will also include monies to increase our counseling services offered to students for both 2021-2022 SY and 2022-2023 SY. Counseling services will include individual services as well as small-group sessions based upon students' needs and whole-class lessons on mindfulness.
In addition to addressing the needs above, FJA will use ESSER funding to enhance students' educational experiences and ensure their safe return to school in the following ways: purchase of Freckle and Star Reading/Math, as well as Scholastic Lit Camp; adoption of new mass communication system to efficiently communicate with families; installation of portable HEPA air filters in each classroom; hire of an additional classroom aide, additional janitorial staff/hours; and technology and furniture to support remote learning and social distancing, respectively.
FJA will monitor the effectiveness of its ESSER-funded interventions and monitor and adjust as needed to meet the needs of students, staff, and families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
