Driver's Education Endorsement
Overview: The Driver's Education Endorsement is optional and will automatically renew with the certificate on which it is attached. Requirements for certification are subject to change and fully referenced in the Arizona Revised Statutes and State Board of Education Rules.
Out-of-state certificate: If you hold a valid, comparable educator certificate or endorsement in another state, please see the Certification Reciprocity Requirements for information on applying under reciprocity rules.
- Prerequisite Certificate: You must hold a valid Arizona Standard Professional Teaching Certificate, Subject Matter Expert Standard Teaching Certificate, Specialized Secondary Teaching Certificate, Classroom-Based Standard Teaching Certificate, International Teaching Certificate, or Career and Technical Education Certificate to apply for this endorsement.
- Application & Fee: Submit the Application for Certification and required fee. The fee for this endorsement is $60. Fees are non-refundable. .
- AZDPS IVP Card: Verify through the ADE Educator Portal that your valid Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) IVP fingerprint clearance card is on file with the ADE or include a photocopy of the AZDPS IVP card with your application
- Arizona Driver's License and Driving Record: Include a photocopy of your Arizona driver's license and driving record with your application. If you are applying online, upload a PDF copy of these documents.
- Official Transcripts or Certificates of Training: If you are using college coursework to meet requirements, have your official transcripts sent to the ADE Certification Unit (see "How to Submit Official Documents" below). If you are using Arizona Department of Education-approved trainings, include a copy of the certificates. If applying online, upload a PDF copy of the certificates of training.
Applicants must meet all requirements listed below.
- Prerequisite Certificate: A valid Arizona Standard Professional Teaching Certificate, Subject Matter Expert Standard Teaching Certificate, Specialized Secondary Teaching Certificate, Classroom-Based Standard Teaching Certificate, International Teaching Certificate, or Career and Technical Education Certificate.
- Arizona Driver's License: A valid Arizona driver's license.
- Acceptable Driving Record: A driving record with less than seven violation points and no revocation or suspension of driver’s license within the two years preceding the application (available from Motor Vehicle Division).
- Driver's Education Coursework or Training. Completion of nine semester hours of courses, or the equivalent Arizona Department of Education (ADE)-approved training*, in driver's education to include all of the following:
- Safety education;
- Driver and highway safety education;
- Driver education laboratory experience.
* Fifteen clock hours of ADE-approved driver's education may substitute for one semester hour of college coursework.
Documents Requiring Submission by the Verifying Authority
- Official Transcripts: Transcripts that are uploaded through the educator portal or emailed by the applicant are not official and will not be accepted. Official transcripts and foreign credential evaluations must be submitted as follows:
- Electronic official transcripts must be submitted directly by the college or university to [email protected].
- Paper official transcripts must be in a sealed envelope and mailed by the college or university to the Arizona Department of Education - Certification Unit; PO Box 6490, Phoenix, AZ 85005-6490.
- Foreign credential evaluations must be sent directly by the approved foreign credential evaluation agency to [email protected] or mailed to the Arizona Department of Education - Certification Unit.
Accepted Photocopies from the Applicant
- AZDPS IVP Card: Submit a photocopy of the Arizona DPS IVP Fingerprint Clearance card.
- AZ Driver's License: Submit a photocopy of your valid Arizona Driver's License
- Driving Record: A photocopy of your motor vehicle driving record for the previous 2 years. Arizona driving records are available online at https://azdot.gov/motor-vehicles/driver-services/driver-license-information/motor-vehiclerecords.
- Verification of Training (if applicable): Copy of certificate of completion of an Arizona Department of Eduction-approved driver's education training.
