Why is our Homeless Education Program being monitored?
The State Education Agency (SEA) must monitor Local Education Agencies (LEAs) in coordination with local McKinney-Vento Homeless Liaisons to ensure compliance with the requirements of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (42 U.S.C. § 11432 (f)(5) & 20 U.S.C. 6312 §1112(b)(6)).

Statutory Requirements for Local Educational Agencies
The McKinney-Vento Homelessness Assistance Act requires that each local educational agency, such as public school districts and public charter districts, designate an appropriate staff member as its McKinney-Vento Homeless Liaison for children and youth experiencing homelessness. The designated McKinney-Vento Homeless Liaison must have the capacity to carry out the statutorily required duties of the position (42 U.S.C. §11432(g)(1)(J)(ii)).
The McKinney-Vento Act requires State Coordinators to provide professional development opportunities for LEA personnel and the LEA liaison to assist them in identifying and meeting the needs of homeless children and youths, and to provide training on the definitions of terms related to homelessness.
