The purpose of the Arizona Department of Education, Title IV-A Safe & Healthy Students Program, is to provide support to schools and LEAs so that every student can experience a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment, including focusing on students' physical and mental health, and safety. A safe, healthy, and supportive school environment is the product of a school’s attention to fostering safety; promoting a supportive academic, disciplinary, and physical environment; and encouraging and maintaining respectful, trusting, and caring relationships throughout the school community, focusing on the fostering of favorable conditions, climate, and culture, including family and community engagement.

ADE Title IV-A School Security Request Memo The Safe & Healthy Students Category of the Title IV-A grant allows SEAs and LEAs A to foster Safe & Healthy learning environments for students, including school security programs. The School Security Request Memo was created to assist the Arizona Department of Education Title IV-A Team in the processing of all school security requests.
Resources Supporting SB 1376 – Schools; Curriculum; Mental Health Senate Bill 1376 was signed into law in July of 2021 and became effective September 29, 2021. It amends ARS 15-701.02 by requiring Health Education instruction to include mental health instruction.

The Signs of Suicide (SOS) program serves middle and high schools across the country. The program has shown a reduction in self-reported suicide attempts by 40-64% in randomized control studies. Through a video and guided discussion, students learn to identify warning signs of suicide and depression in a single class period.

Physical Education is a school-based instructional opportunity for students to gain the necessary skills and knowledge for lifelong participation in physical activity. Physical education is characterized by a planned, sequential K-12 curriculum (course of study) that provides cognitive content and learning experiences in a variety of activity areas. Quality physical education programs assist students in achieving the national standards for K-12 physical education. The outcome of an effective physical education program is a physically literate individual who has the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. Effective Physical Education Teachers base their teaching on the Arizona standards for K-12 Physical Education to provide students with a foundation of skills and knowledge that can apply to many activities so that students are willing, able, and interested in lifetime enjoyment of physical activity.
Health Education provides students with opportunities to acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for making health-promoting decisions, achieving health literacy, adopting health-enhancing behaviors, and promoting the health of others. Comprehensive school health education includes courses of study (curricula) for students in Pre-K through grade 12 that address a variety of topics such as alcohol and other drug use and abuse, healthy eating/nutrition, mental and emotional health, personal health and wellness, physical activity, safety and injury prevention, sexual health, tobacco use, and violence prevention.
Physical Activity in childhood and adolescence is important for promoting lifelong health and well-being and preventing various health conditions. Schools are uniquely positioned to help children and adolescents get the nationally recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day.
Recess is “a regularly scheduled period in the school day for physical activity and play that is monitored by trained staff or volunteers”. During recess, students are encouraged to be physically active and engaged with their peers in activities of their choice, at all grade levels, kindergarten through 12th grade.
CPR Legislation (SB1137) “On or before July 1, 2019, school districts and charter schools shall provide public school pupils with one or more training sessions in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, through the use of psychomotor skills, in an age-appropriate manner, during high school.”

Behavioral Health and Suicide Prevention- PROJECT AWARE Project AWARE supports the development and implementation of a comprehensive plan of activities, services, and strategies to decrease youth violence and support the healthy development of school-aged youth.
