Important message about federal education allocations.
There has been a tremendous amount of misinformation about federal education allocations. Some news reports indicate the Arizona Department of Education has called for cuts. This is inaccurate. These are federal formula funds and AZED functions as the fiscal agent to pass through whatever the US Department of Education awards.
ADE has been in contact with schools to inform them that federal allocations may be lower because of smaller increases approved by congress and the president. Also, statistics compiled by the federal government show a nearly seven percent drop in Arizona among people in poverty.
The federal government bases its primary education allocation to states on the amount in the federal budget and poverty statistics. ADE has no control over the amount, and when the US Dept. of Education calculates the final figures, ADE will allocate every dollar schools are entitled to.
We sent smaller preliminary amounts because the department knew the federal allocation would be smaller than previous years and it was important not to overpay schools now and be forced to call back money later when the final federal amount was known.
We are in the process of calculating the final allocations and will be informing districts shortly.
